Artist's Description

This shows the Hudson River where it meets the Rondout Creek. The Rondout Creek is a 63-mile-long tributary of the Hudson that once served as a major commercial waterway on which goods were transported from inland to the Hudson at Kingston, where they could be shipped further, either upstate or down to New York Harbor and beyond. Between Rosendale and Kingston the Rondout is rather dramatic as well as picturesque. The current lighthouse was built in 1915, replacing a series of predecessors back to the original in this spot, dating from 1837 and intended to warn ships of the shallow tidal flats at the mouth of the creek. This photograph was taken in March, when the still bare trees provided a nice frame for the lighthouse.

Nancy De Flon

My book Historic Hudson Valley: A Photographic Tour, photographed and authored with my son, Anton, was published in July 2013. As a trained historian, one of my great passions is to photograph old buildings. Whether abandoned ruins or...
