Artist's Description
The town of Gorham is in the Androscoggin Valley of NH, close to the Maine border. The arrival of the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad in 1851, at a time when most White Mountains tourist trade depended on stagecoaches, turned this quiet, rural place into a bustling tourist area. The existing railroad station, which dates from 1907, was taken over in 1973 by the Gorham Historical Society and turned into a museum. Some of the most impressive displays are outside, such as this 1949 diesel locomotive.
