Description
Beacon Rock -- the actual rock on the right, not the mansion -- was the subject of paintings by several artists in the 19th century, notably John Kensett. Being interested in Rhode Island geology as well as in New England coastal art, I set out on a quest to locate this rock and finally, after some trial and error, found it in December 2021. I took a few record shots, but the light wasn't conducive to good photography, so I returned in March 2022 and got this.
The mansion, also named Beacon Rock, was built between 1887 and 1891 for Commodore Edwin Morgan, in other words, after the artists had been there and done their thing. It has changed hands a few times since then, most recently in December 2021 for $23 million. (!)
