Description
Prattsville, a town in the northwestern part of the Catskills in New York, was established in 1824 and is named after Zadock Pratt, a businessman who founded and ran one of the largest tanneries in the world. The tannery created many jobs and literally put Prattsville on the map, but with no thought of sustainability, all the hemlock trees needed for the raw material were eventually cut down. Thus ended Prattsville's heyday. However, after a remarkable recovery from Hurricane Irene, which nearly destroyed the area after the Schoharie Creek overflowed its banks, Prattsville and the surrounding town of Windham are making a comeback, as can be seen here in the façade of the Prattsville Hotel in the Main Street of the village.
