This statue of Senator John Chafee of Rhode Island was erected in Colt State Park, Bristol County, after the Senator's death in 1999. Before his time in the Senate, John Chafee also served as Governor of Rhode Island and, earlier, in the Marine Corps. He is regarded as a great public servant. He was also the father of Lincoln Chafee, who served as Rhode Island's governor for one term. Yes, that's a seagull on his head. They often come to visit and probably find this a good vantage point for surveying the water for potential edibles.
